That is the experiment behind The Billion Dollar Painting.

A 54″ × 54″ original abstract oil painting created by Blair Russell in 2020 is being offered through 1,000,000 fractional ownership interests, with each available interest offered at $1,000 USD.

You don’t have to agree that the painting is worth $1 billion.

You don’t even have to believe the experiment will succeed.

The question is simply:

What happens if we try?

A $1 BILLION ART EXPERIMENT

Originally, The Billion Dollar Painting was offered as a single artwork for $1 billion USD.

One painting.

One buyer.

One owner.

But that raised another question:

What if the painting didn’t have to belong to just one person?

What if people around the world could collectively become owners of the same physical artwork?

What if someone could participate for $1,000 instead of $1 billion?

And what if every person who participated became part of the documented history of the artwork?

That question became the foundation for the new concept.

1,000,000 FRACTIONAL OWNERSHIP INTERESTS

The project consists of 1,000,000 total fractional ownership interests in the physical painting.

Each interest represents:

1/1,000,000 fractional ownership interest

Of the 1,000,000 total interests:

999,999 are available for acquisition.

1 interest will remain permanently owned by the artist.

Each available fractional ownership interest is offered at:

$1,000 USD

The aggregate amount represented by 1,000,000 interests at $1,000 each is:

$1,000,000,000 USD

One billion dollars.

An individual may acquire one interest or multiple interests, subject to availability.

For example:

1 interest = 1/1,000,000

10 interests = 10/1,000,000

100 interests = 100/1,000,000

1,000 interests = 1/1,000 of the painting

999,999 interests = 999,999/1,000,000

The artist retains the remaining 1/1,000,000 interest.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BUY THE WHOLE PAINTING

That is the point.

For generations, ownership of major works of art has generally been associated with individual collectors, institutions, galleries, estates, and extremely wealthy buyers.

The Billion Dollar Painting asks a different question.

What if a single physical artwork could have a massive community of owners?

Instead of looking for one person willing to spend $1 billion, the project creates the possibility for potentially 999,999 people to participate.

THE PAINTING ITSELF

The work began as an exploration of light, emotion, movement, color, memory, and the intangible feeling that can exist somewhere between reality and imagination.

Originally titled “Sunlight,” the painting was created using layers of oil paint, brushes, palette knives, scraping, gestural marks, impasto, and delicate washes.

Cadmium oranges and sun-drenched yellows create the dominant sense of warmth and illumination, contrasted by forest greens and muted lavenders.

It is a singular physical work.

But the experiment surrounding it is something entirely different.

WHAT IF YOU COULD SAY:

“I OWN PART OF THE BILLION DOLLAR PAINTING.”

That is one of the simplest ideas behind the project.

You don’t have to be a billionaire.

You don’t have to own an entire museum.

You don’t have to purchase the entire artwork.

For some owners, the attraction may be the artwork itself.

For others, it may be the unusual ownership concept.

I don’t know.

That’s why I’m doing it.

THIS IS AN EXPERIMENT — NOT A GUARANTEE

The Billion Dollar Painting is an artistic and ownership experiment.

There is no guarantee that all 999,999 available interests will be acquired.

There is no guarantee that the painting will ultimately be valued at $1 billion by the art market.

There is no guarantee that an owner’s interest will appreciate in value.

The $1 billion figure is the fundamental premise and target of the project—not a promise of future market value.

The experiment is about finding out what happens when the concept is actually put into the world.

WHY $1,000?

The original proposition was:

Can someone pay $1 billion for one painting?

The new proposition is:

Can potentially 999,999 people collectively participate at $1,000 per interest?

Those are completely different experiments.

$1 billion requires one extraordinary buyer.

$1,000 opens the conversation to a vastly larger potential audience.

And that changes the nature of the project.

It moves the focus away from finding one person with extraordinary wealth.

It puts the focus on participation.

THE STORY GROWS WITH EVERY OWNER

The most interesting part of the experiment may ultimately not be how many interests are sold.

It may be who owns them.

Imagine looking back years from now and seeing thousands of names and locations in the public ownership archive.

Imagine being able to identify the people who participated when the project was still small.
